What's new?

pebble your way

Having a long history and a lot of releases in the past it gets time to create a new product page. The new pebble2 generation is the right time to draw a line.

Note: The "old" product page of OutDoorWatch can still be found here.

Whereas the old pebble was a technical foundation to open the door for a new era of smartwatches, the new pebble2 is a fundamental step in a mandatory direction. The pebble2 now provides nearly anything we only got a taste of by having the first generation of the pebble watch. Now pebble provides color, more system resources, health data as well as an upcoming generation of peripheral devices.

Now it's time to get the freedom of feel guided outdoor without having to carry around bulky equipment.

By using the spare resources of the first generation an idea of a helpful outdoor device was born. Now pebble2 provides new opportunities. Let's use it! The new OutDoorWatch is a first step and...

  • ... runs on (the old) pebble classic, the pebble time, the new pebble round as well as the new pebble2 generation. So it's available for all pebble platforms.
  • ... supports (only on colored pebble) up to 10 color look and feels!
  • ... has (not on pebble classic) in addition a much better gesture recognition algorithm. In particular a new y-axis twitch was added to change "fixed" panels. This enables you to use FixedPanels similar you used InfoPanels before.
  • ... is based on a single setting entity independent of the daily pebble watch device you are using. So a daily switch for example from pebble round to pebble2 will keep available settings. Even a reinstall of the pebble app won't lose any setting you made so far.
  • ... incorporates (not on pebble classic) health data e.g. daily steps as well a distance estimation.
  • ... offers (not on pebble classic) new air pressure and wind speed forecast diagrams.
  • ... has a much more reliable license mechanism. In case the license is unlocked the watchface only must be restarted and the watch automatically gets informed about it. If you for example unlocked InfoWatch on pebble time a switch to your additionally pebble round or pebble steel won't annoy you any more with any unnecessary license issue. It simple works!
  • ... fixes a lot of issues. Thanks for your error reports and patience.
  • ... has a lot of (layout) improvements.

... will be outdoor your best friend - so have fun!

Yes, the app will cost small money - is subject to a fee. Anyway you will get a full featured license for at least on day free of charge – so give it a try.

Note: In case you’ve still paid your fee, it remains valid! No need to do anything. :)

Be aware that it's a hard work to develop such an app and a fee is a kind of 'thank you' for hundreds of hours the developer spend.

Click here to find the app in the pebble market.

In case you lost the link to the paypal button to pay your fee, here it is. ;)

  • Time and date service: The day, time, CW and date in nearly every language is shown. Currently up to 17 languages are supported.
Note: Maybe some translations are missing. But in case you provide your translation to me I will update the corresponding language resource file. It's also possible to add new language files. Don't hesitate and tell me what is missing.
  • Current weather service: The actual weather (incl. the expected max/ min temperature) for a fixed or GPS dependent location is shown.
  • Weather forecast service: The forecast is broken down into 3 hour steps of either today or today and next day. It’s split into a sun information (e.g. temperature and expected sunshine duration) and a rain information (e.g. rain probability and amount).
Note: A detailed documentation of the weather forecast graphs can be found in the section "Weather Configuration" in the settings - press the corresponding "howto" button.
Note: The time of the last weather update as well as the corresponding weather location can be found respective left and right hand side as part of the current weather InfoPanel.
  • Air/ Wind forecast service: The forecast is broken down into 3 hour steps of either today or today and next day. It’s split into an air pressure information and a wind speed information (e.g. max and average wind speed).
  • Night and day service: See on a global map the moving day/ night boundary. In addition the sunrise, sunset as well as the expected sun duration of the day is available.
  • Compass service: A classical magnetic compass displayed as a needle style widget is provided.
Note: The pebble compass heading to determine direction uses the built-in accelerometer and magnetometer. Before it can be used it has to be calibrated. Take into account that e.g. a charging cable has a buildin magnet that prevents the compass of getting a valid calibration!
  • Map service: See on a global map weather locations near to you. Your current location is also depicted. The scale displays the zoom factor whereas the zoom of the latitude can differ from the zoom of the longitude. North is always on the top, east is always on the right hand side of the pebble display.
Note: To get a better orientation it's recommended to adjust the watch by the help of the compass.
  • Notification service: You can be informed every 15 minutes, every 30 minutes or every hour by a short vibration.
  • Bluetooth info service: Get informed by a short vibration in case the Bluetooth connection gets lost.
Note: If you don't like it, you can deactivate it in the settings. But sometimes it's useful because you get feedback if you are going to lose your smartphone. ;)
  • Network service: In case errors occur during data transfer between smartphone and pebble, a corresponding message will be shown instead of the weekday. In the same place you will get info if features are deactivated or time rules prevent information get send to pebble.
Note: Have a glance at the progress bar in the top of your screen, In case an "error" occurs it's drawn bold.

The Panels

Beside the "TimePanel" two further panels are provided: The middle panel is a small one (alias "FixedPanel") the bottom panel is a big one (alias "InfoPanel").

The small FixedPanel is - as the name still says - a static panel. You can choose between information such as course of the sun, weather forecast, current wind speed information, air pressure/ wind speed forecast and a GPS location.

Note: In V2.0 (only for pebble time) a new y-axis twitch gesture was added to the accelerator control. It can be used to change the shown "Fixed"-Panel. Why? It simplifies you OutDoor to get the sunrise info, your current GPS location etc.. So what is fixed in a more and more moving world? ;)

The big Panel at the bottom provides different InfoPanels. Means it's a dynamic and fully configurable content layer. The content either changes (preconfigured) every 60 secs or by accelerator control. In later case a simple turn of your wrist will switch to the next available content.

Note: A detailed usage documentation of the accelerator control can be found in the section "InfoPanel Configuration" - press the corresponding "howto" button.

The Settings

A settings dialog is provided in the pebble app. It offers a brunch of settings - nearly everything is configurable. In particular you can configure the InfoPanel switch duration, enable/ disable accelerator control, your individual language, a color scheme etc..

It’s worth mentioning that the visibility of InfoPanels self can be configured.

You have an opportunity to disable the world shadow, compass and/ or the wind/ weather forecast InfoPanels in general.

Furthermore you can configure a general "load info for InfoPanel" alias InfoPanel timeframe (below "InfoPanel Configuration").

Note: Imagine you don’t want infos are reloaded during the night. Just define a general InfoPanel timeframe.

Note: In case you defined such a general InfoPanel timeframe and you are out of this timeframe a message "no info time" occurs. No wonder, the property affects the availability of infos. ;) Weather is an exception and is independent of any timeframe. It's always gathered from the internet.

In particular the weather configuration should be taken into account.

You have to select a fixed weather location because it's a fallback in case GPS can't locate you. To ease the configuration of your fixed location you can search either per name token or by GPS a weather station near to you.

Per default the GPS location is used to show an individual weather, air and weather forecast. This can be disabled by enabling "Only fix location" in the settings. As a result only the configured fixed location is shown - your GPS location isn't used any more.

Note: You will find GPS options. Normally there is no need to change the options! Only in case your GPS can't reliable find your location, you can adapt the properties "accuracy", "timeout" and "cache time" of your GPS device appropriate.

Note: In case you want to change the "weather/ air forecast switch duration" you have to change the "InfoPanel switch duration". Why? The "weather forecast switch duration" always equals to the half of the "InfoPanel switch duration".
